World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz extended his sizzling run of form on Tuesday, overpowering Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4 in the Japan Open final to capture his eighth title of the year and further underline his dominance on the men’s circuit.
The victory also carried an extra edge for the Spaniard, who avenged his surprise defeat to Fritz at the Laver Cup in San Francisco earlier this month — his first career loss to the American after three straight wins. This time, Alcaraz was in complete control, showing the composure and firepower that have defined his remarkable 2025 season.
The 22-year-old arrived in Tokyo with a slight injury scare after jarring his foot in his opening match, but he shook off any concerns with a commanding week that culminated in his first Japan Open crown. The win marked his 67th match victory of the season and the 24th tour-level title of his career.
“It’s been a pleasure playing here in Tokyo in front of the Japanese fans. I’ve enjoyed every second on court — apart from the five minutes when I hurt my ankle,” Alcaraz joked after the match. “I’m really happy with the level I showed. To start the week with that injury and still end up playing great matches and lifting the trophy feels amazing.”
The final itself was one-sided. After a sharp opening exchange under the roof at Ariake Colosseum, Alcaraz struck first when Fritz faltered on serve late in the opening set. The top seed pressed home his advantage, refusing to let the American settle into a rhythm.
Fritz required treatment for a thigh issue before the second set, but Alcaraz pounced immediately, breaking in the opening game with a searing forehand. He quickly raced to a 4-1 lead, leaving Fritz visibly frustrated, even tossing his racket in despair. Though the Spaniard wavered briefly on serve, he closed out the contest in style with a deft drop shot.
“It’s been my best season so far, without a doubt,” Alcaraz said, reflecting on a year in which he defended his French Open title and reached the Wimbledon final before falling to Jannik Sinner. His only other final defeat came in Barcelona against Holger Rune.
“I didn’t start the year well, struggling emotionally, so looking back now, I’m just proud of myself and grateful to all the people around me who’ve helped me get here,” he added.
With yet another title in his hands and momentum firmly on his side, Alcaraz looks unstoppable as he continues his charge toward finishing the year as the undisputed force in men’s tennis
