Indian opening batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal is on the verge of achieving a significant milestone in his Test career, needing just 97 runs to become the fastest Indian to reach 2,000 Test runs. The young left-hander has the opportunity to surpass Sunil Gavaskar’s 49-year-old record during the second Test against England at Edgbaston, which begins on July 2.

Jaiswal’s consistent performance has been a major positive for India, particularly during this transitional phase in Test cricket. He recently demonstrated his talent with a superb century in the first Test at Headingley. Although his century wasn't enough to prevent India from suffering a five-wicket defeat, it highlighted his potential. Despite India setting a challenging target of 371, England's batsmen, including Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, and Joe Root, executed a calm and successful chase, giving England a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

As India looks to rebound at Edgbaston, Jaiswal’s individual form remains a key source of hope. In his first 20 Tests, he has accumulated 1,903 runs at an impressive average of 52.86.
The current record for the fastest Indian to 2,000 Test runs is held by Sunil Gavaskar, who reached the milestone in his 23rd Test in 1976. Gavaskar went on to become the first cricketer to score 10,000 Test runs. Following Gavaskar are Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag, who both reached 2,000 runs in their 25th Tests.
With his stylish strokeplay and composed demeanor, Jaiswal now has the opportunity to join and even exceed these legendary players, providing India with a crucial advantage in a must-win Test match.
