There are several ways to get out of a labor union. For example, you might be able to leave and stop paying union dues. You will have to check if you can leave at any time or only during certain months of the year. You might also want to stop the union from representing your workplace, which is called “decertification.” You will need to have other workers sign a petition and submit it to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). Finally, you can turn your workplace into a “right to work” jobsite by holding a de-authorization election. As with decertification, you will need to have workers sign a petition and then present it to the NLRB. Although a de-authorized union continues to exist, employees will no longer be required to join as a condition of employment.

Leaving Your Union as an Individual

  1. Step 1 Contact your union representative.
Every union is different. To figure out when and how to leave the union, you will need to talk to your union representative. Call them up or stop by to talk.
    • If you are not in a “right to work” state, then your ability to leave the union can be restricted. You should ask about those restrictions.
