FIFA honored the memory of Diogo Jota, the Liverpool player, and his brother, André Silva, before the quarterfinal games of the Club World Cup in Orlando, Florida, and Philadelphia.
The brothers tragically passed away near Zamora, in northwestern Spain. The car accident, involving their Lamborghini, occurred just after midnight on Thursday.
Prior to the match between Al Hilal and Fluminense at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, players gathered at midfield. A photo of the Portuguese soccer stars was displayed on the video board, followed by a moment of silence.
At Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, before the game between Palmeiras and Chelsea, a black-and-white photo of the brothers was shown. Players from both teams wore black armbands as they observed a moment of silence.
Pedro Neto, Chelsea player and national teammate of Diogo Jota, entered the field with a jersey bearing the names of Jota and André Silva. Neto, with the assistance of Enzo Fernández, displayed the jersey during the moment of silence.
Authorities in Spain are currently investigating the single-vehicle crash. A potential blown tire is being considered as a possible cause.
Jota's death occurred shortly after his marriage to Rute Cardoso, his longtime partner. The couple leaves behind three children.
Silva played for Penafiel, a Portuguese club.
