British number one Emma Raducanu was forced to retire from her first-round match against American Ann Li at the Wuhan Open on Tuesday after struggling with the intense heat and humidity. The world number 30, who appeared low on energy, called for a medical time-out with the score at 6-1 4-1, during which her blood pressure and temperature were checked. The WTA later confirmed that dizziness had prompted her retirement.
Raducanu had initially started brightly, breaking Li’s serve in the opening game, but the momentum quickly shifted. Li dominated the rest of the first set, winning six consecutive games while dropping only a single point on her serve, wrapping up the set in just 28 minutes. Raducanu managed to hold her serve at the start of the second set, but a series of sluggish unforced errors, combined with missed break point opportunities, allowed Li to pull ahead 4-1. Raducanu then requested a medical timeout and ultimately retired from the match, unable to continue under the demanding conditions.
“Hopefully, she recovers quickly. You could tell toward the end she wasn’t moving as much,” said world number 46 Li after the match. Raducanu later shared a screenshot on social media showing her phone registering a temperature of 34C, highlighting the extreme conditions players were facing. Play on all outdoor courts in Wuhan had been suspended on Monday due to the heat, underscoring how challenging the weather has been this week.
Raducanu’s retirement represents a significant setback for her, as a deep run in Wuhan could have boosted her chances of being seeded for the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the season. The British 2021 US Open champion has struggled with consistency in recent tournaments and will now need to regroup ahead of upcoming events.
The conditions in Wuhan are not an isolated issue. At the Shanghai Masters, men’s world number two Jannik Sinner retired in the third round due to cramp, while 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic vomited during his match against Yannick Hanfmann. The ATP is reportedly considering introducing a formal heat rule to protect players in extreme weather.
Li will face Russian ninth seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the second round after Alexandrova defeated Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko 6-3 6-2. Other early results in Wuhan included Naomi Osaka overcoming Leylah Fernandez 4-6 7-5 6-3, Iga Swiatek defeating Marie Bouzkova 6-1 6-1, and American 14th seed Emma Navarro losing 6-2 2-6 6-3 to China’s Shuai Zhang.
