Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal celebrate centuries against England

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, already rising stars, cemented their status with impressive centuries on the first day. Jaiswal's fifth Test century, achieved with a quick single before tea, marked his first in England. Gill's sixth century was a masterclass of elegant strokeplay and calculated aggression.

Gill's century made him only the fourth Indian to achieve this feat as captain in his maiden Test innings. Their combined efforts propelled India to a commanding 359-3 at the close of play, positioning them to dictate the match.

Solid Opening Stand

India had been searching for stability in their opening partnerships. Jaiswal and KL Rahul provided just that on Friday. Despite a slightly lackluster English opening attack consisting of Brydon Carse and Chris Woakes, the Indian openers displayed remarkable patience and discipline to navigate the initial hour on a green-tinged pitch.

Their watchful approach, leaving deliveries outside off-stump, paid dividends. The 91-run partnership laid a solid foundation for India. Rahul (42) was unfortunate to be dismissed before lunch, edging a drive off Carse to first slip.

Debutant Sai Sudharsan's dismissal for a duck briefly lifted English spirits. However, Gill's arrival shifted the momentum back in India's favor.

Gill Leads From The Front

Under overcast skies in the second session, England's pace attack sought to exploit the conditions. However, Gill (127*) and Jaiswal (101) remained unyielding. Gill, who had previously struggled with expansive shots early in his innings in England, displayed newfound restraint and determination.

The English bowlers struggled with their line and length, while Gill showcased his repertoire of strokes. His signature off-side punches were particularly pleasing to watch.

Jaiswal battled through cramps to reach his century. His celebration conveyed the immense significance of the achievement.

Jaiswal eventually fell to a well-bowled delivery from Ben Stokes, but the 129-run partnership had put India firmly in control. With the pitch easing out, Gill and Rishabh Pant (65*), continued to torment the English bowlers.

Gill reached his century with a stylish off-drive, before unleashing his aggressive strokeplay. England face a long and challenging task to salvage the Test match over the remaining four days.
