Shubman Gill, the new Test captain, expressed his honour at leading India and confirmed he would bat at No.4, filling Virat Kohli's spot. He emphasized creating a secure team environment and backing young players. While keeping the playing XI flexible based on pitch conditions, Gill hinted at an evolving team identity to be revealed later in the series.

TimesofIndia.com reports from Leeds: Just a day before India begins its five-match Test series against England at Headingley, the new Test captain Shubman Gill addressed the media. He offered insights into his mindset, the team’s approach, and the changes following the retirements of veteran players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

Calling it the “biggest honor anyone can get,” Gill expressed that leading India is a dream for every cricketer. “Captaining the country is the biggest honor anyone can get,” he stated, projecting a composed confidence that suggested he is ready for the responsibility.

With Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma having retired from Test cricket earlier this year, India is entering a new phase with a revamped leadership group. Gill disclosed that he consulted with both experienced players during the IPL and received valuable guidance. “I met both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the IPL, and they shared their experiences of England. I spoke to them during the IPL,” he said.

The 25-year-old verified that he will bat at No.4, filling the position previously held by Virat Kohli. “After Virat bhai retired, me and GG bhai [head coach Gautam Gambhir] had a discussion about me batting at that number,” he revealed. This strategic move allows India to restructure their top order in what marks a fresh chapter of Test cricket for the team.

Regarding the playing XI and combination for the first Test, Gill indicated that the team is keeping its options open. “We have one or two different combinations ready. Will have a look at the pitch and take the call,” he mentioned, adding that the dry summer in England could influence the conditions.

When questioned about India’s overall strategy in this WTC cycle, Gill remained somewhat enigmatic but intriguing: “You have to wait till August to see what kind of brand we will play,” he remarked with a smile, implying that the team is still shaping its identity.

Looking forward to the series, Gill openly expressed his personal goal. “I want to be the best batter in the series, that’s what I am looking at,” he stated with assurance.

He also discussed the atmosphere within the dressing room, emphasizing the importance of a secure and supportive culture. “We want to create an environment in the team which is very secure,” Gill added, underscoring the team’s commitment to supporting young players and fostering consistency.
