Karun Nair Backed for Test Comeback, Compared to Dravid and Pujara
As India gears up for the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy series against England, former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif is advocating for Karun Nair's return to Test cricket after an eight-year absence.
Kaif, in his YouTube analysis, lauded Nair’s temperament for the red-ball format and his consistent performance in domestic cricket. He drew parallels between Nair and batting legends like Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, and Cheteshwar Pujara, emphasizing his ability to construct long innings.
"Karun Nair can do the same work. He has a complete game. He plays big innings in Ranji and is coming on the back of consistent runs. He can play for an entire day," Kaif stated.
He further added, "The batter who has the ability to score runs by playing grounded shots is one who plays full day. You must also have the ability to leave balls.”
Nair previously made history by scoring a triple-century against England in 2016. Despite a solid domestic record, he has faced years of being overlooked. His potential comeback is viewed as crucial for India's transition following the Test retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
Kaif also highlighted Sai Sudharsan as another batsman in the mould of Dravid and Pujara, praising his low-risk approach and comprehensive technique.
"Sai Sudharsan, I have seen him, he looks like a complete batter. He takes less risk, has solid defense, plays spin and fast bowling very well. He is a complete package," Kaif remarked.
"In a format like IPL, he has scored by playing ground strokes in all matches. I think he can be a future Pujara or Rahul Dravid.”
Kaif also suggested Nitish Reddy as India’s fourth fast-bowling option for the first Test, preferring him over Shardul Thakur due to Reddy’s batting capabilities and recent red-ball performances.
"I think Nitish Reddy will be the fourth fast bowler because he will also bat at No. 8. He can come after Jadeja. He scored a century in Australia and he can come and pick up one or two wickets," Kaif concluded.
