England Opts to Bowl; Karun Nair Returns to Indian Test Squad After 2,763 Days
England won the toss and chose to bowl against India in the first Test at Headingley on Friday. The Shubman Gill-led Indian side features a youthful lineup, with Karun Nair making a comeback to the Test team after more than seven years. His previous appearance was in March 2017.

India’s playing XI includes: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudarshan, Shubman Gill (captain), Rishabh Pant (vice-captain), Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Prasidh Krishna, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj.
Nair's inclusion marks the culmination of a long and patient journey. Although he was part of the 2018 England tour, he did not play a match. Almost eight years later, he is finally set to play a Test in English conditions. In a video shared by BCCI before the match, Nair reflected on what sustained him during these years.
"My primary thought each day was the desire to play Test cricket for India once more. That belief fueled me. It served as the motivation to attend training and practice daily," Nair stated.
He also mentioned that stepping back into the dressing room made his return feel tangible.
"Seeing everyone for the first time, that's when it hit me - I'm back," he said.
Nair also reflected on his personal development, "I've gained more patience and self-forgiveness. I've learned to appreciate the small joys and avoid trying to be someone I'm not."
He also feels more at ease in the current team environment. "Playing alongside KL and Prasidh, individuals I've known since childhood, makes this comeback even more memorable."
India begins a new World Test Championship cycle without key players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and R Ashwin. With a younger team and fresh leadership, this provides an opportunity for players like Nair to seize their second opportunity.
“Hi, this is Karun Nair, and I’m ready to go,” he concluded in the video. After 2,763 days, his chance has finally arrived.
